Puakea Golf Club is a public access golf course in Lihue on the Hawaiian island of Kauai.
The course was originally built as a 9 hole facility on an old sugar cane plantation just 2 miles from Lihue airport.
In 2003 the course re opened after a major makeover from noted architect Robin Nelson. Nelson made full use of the terrain to craft an entertaining 18 holes of golf.
After a quite opening few holes through a housing estate the course heads into tropical jungle with significant elevation changes and water hazards featuring- and all with a magnificent mountain backdrop.
It is quite a dramatic course from hole 6 onward...
Notable holes include:
- hole 6, a par 3 featuring a long drop to a green set in a gully, with water protecting the front of the green, and wonderful mountain backdrop
- hole 12, a longish par 4 with water hazard and strategically placed tree protecting a picturesque green
- hole 13, a long par 3 with water ready to claim anything hit slightly to the right.
- hole 15, a long par 4 through the jungle with undulating fairway and strategic bunkering a feature
Puakea is a quality course in a memorable setting.
Located in the heart of Lihue not far from the airport, it is an obvious addition to golf tours in Kauai
