Waikoloa Beach Resort is a popular resort development not far north of Kona airport on The Big Island in Hawaii.

The resort is home to a number of luxury hotels and condos, has lovely beaches, high end shopping, and of course two 18 hole golf courses, both of which feature outcrops of black lava, and swaying coconut trees..

Waikoloa Beach Resort- Beach Course

The Beach Course was designed by Robert Trent Jones Jnr, and opened for play in 1981.

It is a classic Hawaiian resort style layout incorporating water, and swaying coconut palms- and has been designed for all level of golfer.

While the stronger player will appreciate the strategic shot values required, the course won't beat up the higher handicapper who will enjoy the pictresque surroundings

Generally fairways are wide, greens are generous, and most bunkers have low lips- so there is no excuse to not have a good score!

The course has a number of areas where the distinctive black lava frames the hole.

A point of interest is the local rule that declares lava areas be played as lateral hazards...

But what makes the Beach Course one of the most popular on Hawaii Island is the amazing views, particularly as players reach No. 7 tee box.

The Pacific Ocean is straight before you, while lava fields border the fairway on the left and right. A good tee ball should find the wide fairway, but beware, the wind can blow harder here by the shoreline than elsewhere on the course, so aim wisely.

From the landing zone, the par-5 hole doglegs hard left, and a smart layup will leave you a short wedge to a putting surface ringed by swaying coconut palms and crashing waves.

Putt out for par and then pose for a selfie with your companions on this most scenic hole.

Throughout the course, designer Jones made creative use of lava and water, taking into account the prevailing trade winds.

Better players have the opportunity to go low and make birdies, but families and new golfers will also enjoy the course as a fun place to play golf.

Other good holes include the par 3 17th hole, and par 3 sixth hole.

This is fine holiday golf with enough challenges to keep you on your toes, and while the conditioning is not pristine, it is pretty good.
