The Dunes course is the first of four at Costa Navarino.
It was designed by Bernard Langer and opened for play in 2010.
The first thing that struck me about the Dunes was the beauty of the site.
The occasional sea views were magic, but the entire property was comparable to a botanical garden..
The majestic old olive trees add real character to the course which is absolutely surrounded by all manner of trees, shrubs and native grasses.
The course itself was challenging, but fair.
Strategic bunkering will attract the attention of the serious golfer, but the green complexes are in my mind the key to scoring on the Dunes Course.
The large greens have a number of sections with movement between them making it important to hit the right section to secure a stress free par.
Notable holes include:
- hole 2, a short downhill par 4 with ocean backdrop. Gorgeous!
- hole 6, another short par 4 with a big drop from tee to fairway, and a beautifully bunkered approach to a green with a wonderful mountain landscape behind (see pic top of page)
- hole 14, a nicely bunkered short par 3 with the green tucked in the vegetation
- hole 18, a brutal uphill par 5 finishing hole- it takes three solid shots to get home over and past a succession of gaping bunkers..
The Dunes Course is high end resort golf.
With sea views and a gorgeous landscape, the Dunes is a very nice place for a golfing holiday.
