The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is a federation of seven emirates on the Persian Gulf. It was constituted in 1971 when the British withdrew from the area, and shares borders with Oman, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Iran.
The seven emirates are: Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm al-Qaiwain, Ras al-Khaimah, and Fujairah. Each emirate is governed by an absolute monarch, and together they form the Federal Supreme Council.
Islam is the official religion and Arabic is the official language, although English is widely used. The UAE's oil reserves are the seventh largest in the world, and the natural gas reserves are seventeenth largest. Wealth generated from these resources has been directed into healthcare, education and infrastructure, with Dubai emerging as a global city, shopping haven, and international aviation hub.
The climate can be severe with average maximum temperatures in July & August topping 40C! However it can be very pleasant from November to February where that average max drops to mid 20's..
