Mountain Lake GCMountain Lake GC

Located 52 miles from Orlando in Florida, Mountain Lake was designed in 1916 by Seth Raynor, and set in a vast planned landscape designed by Frederick Olmsted from Central Park fame.

This is the same combination we witnessed at Yeamans Hall.

Both courses are revered by those in the know, but not well known by the general public.

Raynor was not a golfer and had 22 links templates he had learned with CB McDonald which he used in designing his courses.

Holes include: Double Plateau, Alps, Long, Biarritz, Road, Short, Redan, Punchbowl & Eden

The course was in wonderful condition, and the setting was just gorgeous with the lakes, trees and birdlife..

I particularly liked the Redan, Short, Biarritz templates and Raynor's own hole (called Raynor) with its wonderful green and setting.

There are some holes however which although good strong golf holes well presented - do not in my opinion portray the feel of the original template they portray.

In this regard I refer to the Alps hole, the Road Hole, and the Eden hole.

I just could not "see" the Eden hole, and the Alps and Road hole originals have such strong physical features that a concept hole based on the same template without these features over flattish terrain really misses the mark IMO.

Still I loved the course and the experience, and would recommend it to anyone.
