Costa Navarino- The Bay Course, hole 2
The fabulous golf resort at Costa Navarino kicked off when the Bernard Langer designed Dunes Course opened for play in 2010.
A year later the Bay Course opened, designed by Robert Trent Jones Jnr.
The Resort now boasts four courses with the Olympic and the Hills Courses designed by Jose Maria Olazabal opening for play in 2022.
Our group of travelling golfers visited in late August enjoying warm sunny days in golfing paradise.
I am a real fan of RTJ's work world wide, so I was keen to experience the Bay Course.
It seemed to me that it was a hillier site than others at Costa Navarino.
The course has six par 3's and five par 5's, which is a tad unusual!
But the land dictates the design and the par 3's connected tees and greens where there was no place for a fairway!
The par 3's include drop shot holes, others from hill to hill and some in restricted space..
The par fives are needed to give the course length but of necessity are routed largely up and down the valleys between hills.
The downhill holes were fun, but after a tropical downpour playing the uphill par 5's was difficult as drivers were getting no run at all...
It is a good test of golf, and a beautiful place to be
Notable holes include:
- hole 1, a shorter downhill par 4 with a fabulous ocean backdrop. It is a great way to start the round.

- hole 6, a longer par 3 in a dramatic setting

- hole 8, a delightful downhill dropshot with ocean views

- hole 14, a shorter par 4 where the tee shot needs to negotiate a lake, and the green tests the accuracy of the approach.

The Bay Course is high end resort golf.
The hilly landscape has challenged the architect who has designed a course sympathetic to the site.
With the sun shining, it is a wonderful place to relax and play.
