Kyoto Golf Club is a private club that was established in 1948 on the outskirts of Kyoto.
The club has two courses.
The Kamigamo course designed by Shiro Akahoshi was the first built.
The Funayama course (formerly named The West Course) followed in 1962.
We played the Kamigamo course in March 2023.
The front nine is impressive, with striking strategic holes capturing the golfer’s imagination.
The back nine is good, but not at the same level as the outward nine.
The course coming in gives the impression of being a little cramped for space, whereas the front nine is in a world of it's own..
There is nice variety in the type of hole presented, with a combination of longer, stronger and shorter more strategic par fours.
The course has a liberal sprinkling of burns crossing and bordering the fairways, and the central lake adds to the aesthetics, as well as the strategies on many of the holes.
The par 3’s use the more mountainous terrain to produce some dramatic drop shot holes.
Notable holes include:
- Hole 5, a very attractive downhill par 3 with water beyond
- Hole 7, a short strategic uphill par 4 where the elevated green is a hard target to hit
- Hole 9, a picturesque mid length par 3 over water
- Hole 14, a short par 4, with an island green (see pic top of page)
- Hole 15, a short downhill par 3
The ancient city of Kyoto is one of the real sightseeing and experience highlights of any trip to Japan.
Given it's close proxomity, Kyoto GC should be included in itineraries for all travelling golfers
