History
Circolo Golf Bogogno was established in 1996 with the opening of an 18 hole Robert von Hagge designed course in the northern Italian Lakes district.
By the year 2000 the club boasted 36 holes with Von Hagge's partner Rick Baril adding a further two nines which were paired with the two nines from the original course to form the Bonora and Del Conte courses.
Surrounded discretely by a residential estate, and boasting an imposing clubhouse, Circolo Golf Bogogno is one of Italy's most impressive golfing complexes.
Course
The del Conte course has a lovely setting.
It is a low lying rolling landscape interspersed with lakes, streams, burns, and trees- it has a real woodland feel.
Von Hagge and Baril have complemented the natural terrain by adding artifiicial mounding to frame fairways and greens- normally this is not something I would advocate, but at Bogogno it has worked quite well.
Over time the natural foliage, and grasses have softened the look and made it look somewhat more natural.
The water hazards define some of the more memorable holes, and surrounded by reeds, vines and longer grass produce a natural parkland feel somewhat out of step with the beautifully manicured courses of the modern era.
I found it quite endearing!
Notable holes include:
- the par 3 second hole with tee shot between two sizeable trees
- the par 5 eighth hole with water carry off the tee and lovely valley setting
- the par 4 ninth hole with green set hard against the water- it is a short approach, but an intimidating one...
- the par 3 eleventh hole with water carry off the tee and water behind the green
-the par 3 thirteenth hole with water in play along the right hand side of the hole
- the par 4 seventeenth 'Cape' hole with as much water carry as you dare off the tee!
The Bogogno del Conte course was a pleasure to play, and combined with a very pleasant lunch afterward makes for a first class golfing experience.
With a hotel on site, and two classy golf courses, Bogogno makes for an ideal Italian golfing retreat.
