History
Royal Fremantle was the first 18 hole golf course in Western Australia, and dates from 1907. Originally designed by Arthur Oliphant and Peter Anderson, the club was granted royal status in 1930.
In 1970 Tommy Howard and Sloan Morpeth redesigned the course after land was lost to a development
Course
Royal Fremantle is a delightful parkland course in the heart of suburbia. With lush kikuyu fairways, and a typical Aussie bush setting of gum trees and blackboys it really is a lovely place to play golf
This is a good members course rather than a championship course, but is a strong test of golf.
Notable holes include:
- the long par 4 opening hole, which sets the standard high to start
- the winding par 5 second hole keeps you on your toes with a green tucked sharply around a corner, and protected by a cluster of black boys front right of the green
- the short dogleg par 4 fifth is a picturesque hole which requires some accuracy off the tee to find a path to the green
- the par 3 eighth hole is a medium length downhill hole with a very interesting green complex
- the par 3 seventeenth is a strong finishing hole
Royal Fremantle is a pleasure to play, a good club course, in fine condition. It would be an ideal opener to any tour of Perth
