Punta Espada GC- hole 10 approach
Punta Espada is a Jack Nicklaus signature course, set right on the coastline in The Dominican Republic's Cap Cana district.
The course opened for play in 2007.
It is reputed that a further two courses wil follow..
Mr Nicklaus and team have had a hand in building over 450 courses around the world and Punta Espada may well be one of his best.
They have shown a deft touch at Punta Espada with the use of the natural topography.
Eight holes play along or over the sea.
There are some great holes, and they look like they were always there.
My favourite is hole thirteen, a 250 yard par three over the ocean to a raised green.
It is an epic hole!
Notable holes include:
- Hole 4, a mid length par 3 over the arc of the beach

- hole 5, a strong par 4 at the base of the clliffs

- Hole 10, a unique dog leg par 4 with water in play for the approach to a green in an island of sand (see pic top of page)
- Hole 12, a par 5 around the beachfront with a gorgeous seaside green setting

- Hole 13, perhaps one of THE great oceanside par 3’s- It’s Cypress Point like!

- Hole 18, an attractive par 4 along the beach to finish!

Punta Espada is generally regarded as the premier course in The Dominican Republic.
Although perennial world top 100 course, The Teeth of the Dog cannot be ignored!
Any golf trip to The Dominican Republic is spoilt for choice, but should include these two twice!
