Less than an hour west of Bangkok, Suwan Golf and Country Club is rightly known as one of the best courses in Thailand.
The Club hosted the 2011 and 2012 Thailand Opens and has water coming into play on most holes.
The course was a little damp when we played it which made a very challenging course and fairly difficult for most golfers.
The golf course's undulating and challenging layout gives every hole its own unique character.
The fairways have many uneven lies and most of the greens are well bunkered.
Several holes have significant elevation changes where level fairways play uphill to built-up and well-guarded greens.
There is plenty of movement requiring more than just a cursory read of the greens.
Several holes require long and straight tee shots to take the strategically placed fairway hazards out of play.
Shot making accuracy is at a premium with strategic approaches required coming into nearly every hole.
There are a number of dogleg holes that tempt golfers to cut corners.
Those who are succesful reap big rewards, but penalties are severe for a failed attempt!
The 4th hole (par 4) necessitates an accurate drive– my drive was so accurate, I hit that tree!
One of the feature holes is the 16th– 182 metres off the blue tees with most of that distance over water.
The drop zone was overly generous (and used by most of our group!) and led to only a short chip to the green.
The 16th hole (par 3)– 170 metre carry over water.
The course plays 7,110 yards off the black tees, 6,681 off the blue tees, 6,327 off the white and 5,758 off the red.
Suwan is definitely worth playing on your next visit to Bangkok.
