Peninsula Papagayo is an Arnold Palmer design dating from 2004.

The course is set in tropical vegetation on the point of the Papagayo Peninsula.

It was originally routed through old plantation land, so as not to disturb the local ecology.

Set high on the peninsula many of the holes have glorious views of the surrounding seascape.

The significant elevation changes on the course add to the drama.

Connecting the holes in the design stage must have been a challenge.

To connect from green to the next tee can involve some significant drives.

Those concrete cart paths can resemble roller coasters at times.

But by committing to cart golf Mr Palmer and team have freed themselves to use the most dramatic land for golf.

And believe me there are some wonderful golf holes!

Notable Holes include:

- hole 2, a shortish par 3 with a cute green setting in trees right on the ocean

- hole 6 (El Bajo), a dramatic downhill par 4 which drops steeply through heavy scrub to a beachside green.

Peninsula Papgayo is a different kind of golf.

It is picturesque, dramatic, and relatively unique.

The elevation changes are severe and some tees are literally miles from the previous green.

But in it's own way it is something really special, and a great days golf.

Combined with a world class hotel, and a nice warm climate, it makes for a very special golfing getaway..
