Laguna Golf Phuket was originally designed by Max Wexler and opened in 1993. A substantial remodelling was completed in 2014 under the guidance of Canadian architect Paul Jansen who recently worked with Nick Faldo design to complete Laguna Lang Co in Vietnam.
Jansen reversed the front and back nine holes, accentuated water features and contours, and rebuilt several holes as new to offer a more challenging course. At the same time the playing surfaces were replaced with a new strain of Zoysia grass much more tolerable to the conditions in Phuket. Also significant investment was made in infrastructure both on and off the course. The end result is still a resort course- but one which offers the real golfer some challenges and interest while still being playable for the resort golfer.
Located adjacent to the wonderful Banyan Tree resort, the course needs to cater for the top end of the market, and it can now do that.
The greens now have quite a bit of movement in places, and throughout the course the rolling fairways, depressions and mounds disguise the fact that the basic landscape is flat. This is a second shot course, and the greens are the defence. Jansen has produced some bold greens structures- a number of greens have been pushed up, and have significant drop off areas as well as strategic bunkering. Some greens appear quite severe and will require accurate approaches, and there is even a Biarritz type green!
On the front nine water dominates , while the back nine heads into the trees a little more...
Probably the most memorable hole is the long, long 612 yard par 5 17th hole with at least two water carries.
While Laguna Phuket hosted the 2009 Thailand Open, I do not regard it as a true championship course. Rather I would recommend it as a most enjoyable course which has been designed for travelling golfers of all skill levels to enjoy. It's just great fun!
And what could be nicer than to stay in one of the Banyan Tree private villas, and wander out to play Laguna Golf Phuket for the day....
