Phokeethra CC- hole 16Phokeethra CC- hole 16

Phokeethra Country Club was designed by Weerayudth Phetbusasak from Weeyos Golf Design and opened for play in 2007.

It is a championship course and has now hosted the Cambodian Open four times.

With flat terrain the designer has used the assets he was given- water and trees- to fashion a challenging layout.

Every hole bar one features at least one water hazard, sometimes two...

The holes holes are framed by the natural vegetation and are also well bunkered

Most of the green complexes are raised and protected by both sand and water.

When we played the course was beautifully maintained.

The greens were firm and fast increasing the challenge of holding the green with approaches that needed to clear water or bunkers or both.

Perhaps it was the humidity, but I also thought the course played longer than the card suggested- it is a course where carry is a key factor

In the end of the day I thought it was quite a challenging course- as you would expect from a championship layout.

It was also a very photegenic course and a joy to play

Also important was the overall service levels- perhaps due to the alliance with the 5 star Sofitel Hotel in Siem Reap- but the hospitality, food and services was 5 star...

 Notable holes include:

hole 1- a par 5 with water in play all the way down the right hand side

hole 6- a picturesque par 3 with a water carry to an elevated green also protected by bunkers short and long.

hole 10- a longer par 4 with a tree dividing the fairway

hole 13- a challenging par 5 with water carries off the tee and for the approach to the green

hole 14- a 235 yard par 3 with water in play

hole 16- another pretty & challenging par 3 over water (see pic top of page)

Most people head to Siem Reap to see the temples at Angkor Wat- a UNESCO world Heritage site.

They really are special.

But if you want to play some golf whilst there Phokeethra CC is a course you absolutely should add to your itinerary
