Sea Pines GC
Sea Pines GC (also known as The Army Golf Club 2) is located right on the coast in the Gulf of Thailand, not far from Hua Hin.
Originally owned by the Royal Forestry Department, the land was taken over by the Royal Thai Army under the rule of Field Marshall Sarit Thanarat, who served as Prime Minister of Thailand from 1957-1963.
The large tract of land has ocean and mountain vistas, and included sandy tracts and many bracken pine trees.
The army originally developed the site as a form of retreat for soldiers, veterans and their families.
In 2010 part of the land was opened as a golf course which was designed by Major General Weerayudth Phetbuasak.
The routing of the course takes the golfer through links and parkland like settings into the pine trees, and then back to the beach where the sea breezes really come into play for the finishing three holes.
Sea Pines is a pleasant place to play a relaxed game of golf in a warm climate.
There are some interesting holes out there!
Water hazards need to be negotiated on at least half of the holes accounting for fairly decent slope ratings from the blue and black tees.
Maintenance levels are reasonable, but not to the standard of the new boys in town- Black Mountain & Banyan...
If you are heading to Hua Hin for a golfing holiday, you must play those aforementioned courses as a priority- maybe even play them twice.
But Sea Pines GC might just be the warm up game you need.
If so bring a few balls, as the wind and the water will get you if you are rusty!
And the lovely coastal finish is a highlight!
