Greg Norman designed El Desafio GC which opened 9 holes for play in 2015.
Although a further 9 holes higher up the mountain is planned to be constructed, as at Feb 2018 there was no clubhouse or made roads, or any other discernible further development activity- although apparently there are 4 finished homes in the estate and a further 4 under construction..
The Course is built high on a mountain near San Martin de los Andes in Northern Patagonia (and is neigbour to Chapelco) and has dramatic elevation change throughout with wide fairways and elevated greens well protected by large sand belt style bunkering …
It would be a brute to play from the back tees in wind with some long accurate carries between trees required to hit the fairways, although the fairways are wide, and very accommodating off forward tees. As with many Norman courses the shot to the green is the more critical examination, and the green complexes are nicely shaped and impressive bunkered.
The course is currently rated no 6 in Argentina, but will surely move near the top if and when the second nine is completed
Most notable holes include:
- the downhill par 4 second hole
-the long downhill par 3 sixth hole with it's dramatic bunkering
- the par 3 ninth hole which uses a wonderful large rock formation as a background
El Desafio is a quality course in a majestic setting, and when combined with neighbour Chapelco will make the best 1-2 combo in Argentina- let's hope the back nine and infrastructure is completed soon.
