Circolo Golf Villa d'Este is located near Lake Como and north of Milan and has long been regarded one of Italy's premier golfing experiences.

The course was designed by Peter Gannon in 1926 on a tight hilly site near Lake Montorfano.

With little room to move, Gannon has put together a remarkable routing which heads off in all directions on what is a heavily treed, steep site.

In doing so he has produced a par 69 course which measures 6300 yards off the championship tees.

But it does seem to play significantly longer!

The courses features 6 wonderful par 3's, only one of which measures under 180 yards.

The green complexes are outstanding with smallish greens protected by a goodly number of deep threatening bunkers, amidst a background of chestnut, ash & pine trees.

Gannon has incorporated a nice mix of long and short par 4's and 5's to add variety to what is a surprisingly interesting and challenging course.

But one really should not be surprised- a little research shows that Villa d'Este has hosted the Italian Open twelve times!

These days it is considered too short for the modern professional game, but still hosts a number of high profile amateur events each year.

The course is beautifully maintained and overlooked by one of the most magnificent old clubhouses in golf.

It is not hard to see why it was a favourite haunt for European aristocracy in years gone by...

Notable holes include:

- the long par 3 third hole

- the shorter par 4 ninth hole with sunken green
