Crandon Golf at Key Biscayne was designed by Robert Von Hagge and Bruce Devlin and opened for play in 1972.

The course is located on the Barrier Island and accessed by the famous Richenbacher causeway.

It is well located, being only minutes from downtown Miami.

Over the years, Crandon Golf at Key Biscayne has hosted a long line of nationally televised PGA Champions Tour events.

It is a championship course!

Course

Crandon weaves it's way through mangrove swamps and salt water lakes.

There are some particularly interesting holes- I thought the par 3 third hole was a standout!

The set up of the tees- each with completely different views of the target green is outstanding.

And a number of holes vary the length and angle of approach very well between the various tees.

Hole 12 is perhaps the best example of this.

Yet Crandon could be more- although it is surrounded by ocean, the thick vegetation blocks all views.

A careful thinning would introduce dramatic ocean views and add to the drama.

The course meanders through the mangroves, which is home to our four legged friends, the racoons.

They made hit and run missions to our carts as we lined up to hit.

While they are searching for food our experience was somewhat more dramatic.

After shooing Robber Racoon away for 17 holes he chose his moment well on the 17th as we all scattered to hit our shots.

He took a back pack with some food, but also wallets, passports etc.

It caused a panicked response to follow him into the mangroves to retrieve the bag which was upended in the swamp.

We did manage to retrieve all the important things, but were a little muddied and scratched from our tussle in the mangroves!

Notable holes include:

- hole 1, a strong par 5 opening hole with challenging water carry tee shot
