Often referred to as 'The Rose of the North", Chiang Mai is located 700 km, or a one hour flight north of Bangkok, and with a population of 1.7 million people is Thailand's second biggest city.

Chiang Mai was originally built in 1296 as a walled city roughly 1.5km square, surrounded by a moat. Parts of the wall and moat from the Old City are still visible in the heart of the modern city, as are temples such as the 14th century Wat Phra Singh and the 15th century Wat Chedi Luang. Chiang Mai was the capital of the Lanna Kingdom from 1296 to 1768. This became the kingdom of Chiang Mai- a tributary state of Thailand from 1774 to 1939. The new city has basically built up around the old city..

The food is wonderful, and the local markets are extensive, varied and clean. They are are real highlight of any visit. Chiang Rai

Chiang Rai is the northernmost city in Thailand. It was established in 1262 by King Mangria and became the capital of the Mangria dynasty. Thereafter Chiang Rai was conquered by Burma and remained under Burmese rule until 1786. Eventually Chiang Rai became a province of Thailand in 1933.

These days Chiang Rai is a delightful small city that welcomes travellers. It is known for its relaxed atmosphere, local cuisine, and as the base for exploring the region, where it lies in the heart of the exotic Golden Triangle. The province is located where Myanmar, Laos & Thailand converge, and is renowned for its beautiful mountain scenery, Mekong river, hill tribe villages, temples and ancient sites and ruins. The popular Golden Triangle Tour includes Thailand's mountaintop Chinatown, the 700 year old city of Chiang Sean, the notorious Golden Triangle, Laos and Myanmar borders and the Opium museum.
