Abu Dhabi GC
Abu Dhabi Golf Club was designed by Peter Harradine and opened 27 holes for play in 1998.
The course was well received and in 2006 hosted the inaugural Abu Dhabi Golf Championship on the European Tour.
The tournament course comprising 18 of the 27 holes became known as Abu Dhabi National
The championship became one of the premier events on the tour.
In 2022 Yas Links took over as host of the event.
Event winners include: Paul Casey, Martin Kaymer, Rickie Fowler, Shane Lowry, Lee Westwood and more..
The course is relatively flat and relies on bunkers and water hazards to keep the golfer honest.
Off the back tees it plays long, but playing off the appropriate shorter tees visiting golfers can hold their own if they play strategically.
I find it nice to recognise holes from the TV coverage, and Abu Dhabi kicks a big goal when you again sight the landmark Falcon clubhouse on that final hole.
Notable Holes include:
- hole 4, a short par 3 with water encroaching on the right and a heavily bunkered green
- hole 5, A long dogleg par 4 with water in play off the tee and bunkers to navigate at the turn
- hole 7, a longer flattish par 3 dominated by a large raised bunker right across the front of the green.
- hole12, a longish all water carry par 3 with an attractive stonewall backdrop
- hole 15, an attractive short par 3 defended by three large bunkers (see pic top of page)
- hole 18, an epic long testing final hole with water and bunkers always in play until the finish below the falcon.
It is always nice to play one of the championship courses we see on our TV screens each year.
Abu Dhabi no longer hosts the Championship each year, but remains a popular venue for travelling golfers from all over the globe..
