 Augusta National Golf Club

Rae's Creek at Augusta National Golf Club

Augusta National Golf Club was founded by Bobby Jones, the legendary amateur champion, and Clifford Roberts, an astute investment banker in New York. Jones helped design the golf course, working alongside the esteemed British architect Dr. Alister Mackenzie. Jones's popularity within the game helped attract golf's biggest stars to the Masters, beginning with the inaugural event in 1934.

Augusta National is generally regarded as one of the great courses of the world, and one of the most difficult to get to play on...

The land was originally a plant nursery, and the holes were named after the tree or shrub with which they had become associated.

Hole names are: Tea Olive, Pink Dogwood, Flowering Peach, Flowering Crab Apple, Magnolia, Juniper, Pampas, Yellow Jasmine, Carolina Cherry, Camellia, White Dogwood, Golden Bell, Azalea, Chines Fir, Firethorn, Redbud, Nandina & Holly.

The second shot at the 11th hole, the 12th hole and the tee shot at the 13th are nicknamed "Amen Corner" because of the drama attached to the golf at this stage in the course.

The course is immaculately maintained, and one of the most picturesque in the world.

 The Masters

Augusta National Golf Club- home of The Masters

The Masters was started by Bobby Jones and Clifford Roberts in 1934, and is unique among the Majors in that it is only played at Augusta National. The tournament has developed a number of traditions including:

- The winner each year wins a green jacket which they may retain for one year and then return
- The previous year's winner places the jacket on the winner
- Because The Masters was the brainchild of amateur Bobby Jones, amateur golf is honoured and winners of amateur tournaments around the world are invited to play with the professionals.
- Since 1963 an honorary opening tee shot is played on the 1st hole by one or more of golf's legendary players.
- The menu for the Champions Dinner each year is chosen by the prior year winner.
- The par 3 contest was introduced in 1960 and is played on the Wednesday before the tournament proper. Players are often accompanied by family. The winner of the par 3 tournament has never won the Masters...
- Spectators can purchase chairs which can be placed around greens in key viewing spots, and cannot be moved by others- this means fans can get up and get lunch, visit the facilities, follow a group etc - and then return to their seat...
It also works well in that rows of chairs enable easy viewing for those standing behind..
