Boston businessman James Walter Tufts sold his soda business in 1895 and purchased 6000 acres of land in the North Carolina Sandhills with the express purpose of building a health resort, and opened the Holly Inn that year. Tufts employed Frederick Law Olmstead ( of Central Park fame ) to design the village and central green for what became the village of Pinehurst. Although the first golf course was laid out in 1897 by a Dr Leroy Culver, it wasn't until Donald Ross was appointed in 1900 that golf really came into it's own at Pinehurst. Scottish born Ross designed over 400 courses in his time, many of which have stood the test of time. He is rightly regarded as one of the finest golf architects the world has seen. Pinehurst no 2 opened in 1907 and Ross declared it was 'the fairest test of championship golf I have ever designed".
Indeed Pinehurst no 2 has now hosted major championships such as the U.S. PGA, the Ryder Cup, The Tour Championship, and a number of U.S. Opens- perhaps the most famous of these was the 1999 Open won dramatically by Payne Stewart.
But Pinehurst Resort wasn't all about the golf, although that is what it is universally known for now. Originally Tufts designed it as a health resort, and riding, hunting, cycling and archery were key activities. In 1916 exhibition shooter Annie Oakley came to Pinehurst Gun Club teaching 125000 people how to shoot in a 5 year period.
But these days it is all about the golf. Pinehurst now has 9 championship course under its care, and the general sandhills area around Pinehurst has many more.
Golf in Pinehurst Resort
Pinehurst is known as 'the home of golf in the USA', and boasts nine wonderful courses:
Pinehurst No 1 was designed by Dr Leroy Culver and John D Tucker and is a shorter, easier course
Pinehurst no 2 is the flagship for Pinehurst, and the most famous of its courses. It was designed by Donald Ross, but undertook a major facelift in 2011 when Coore & Crenshaw undertook a year long renovation to revert the course back to the original Donald Ross design concept.
Pinehurst no 3 was also designed by Donald Ross, but is a shorter easier course
Pinehurst no 4 is a complete renovation by Tom Fazio and is a championship course
Pinehurst no 5 is an old Ellis Maples design and is regarded as a good test of golf.
Pinehurst no 6 was designed by George Fazio and is longer and harder than 1, 3, & 5.
Pinehurst no 7 is a Rees Jones ( the Open Doctor ) design and measures 7216 yards from the back beaters and can be a brute
Pinehurst no 8, by Tom Fazio is also a real championship layout, and one of my favourite courses in the resort.
Pinehurst no 9 is a signature Jack Nicklaus course and was originally known as Pinehurst National GC
The Sandhills of North Carolina
Nth Carolina is blessed with good golf from the mountains to the sea, but it is The Sandhills that have become renowned with over 40 quality courses including 'the home of golf in USA', Pinehurst Resort. Wherever possible Travelling Golfers should take the opportunity to sample some of the courses outside The Pinehurst Resort in The Sandhills as well as the resort itself. Donald Ross and his protege Ellis Maples extended their influence into The Sandhills and legendary courses like Pine Needles, and Mid Pines deserve your attention. More modern marvels include The Dormie Club- designed by no 2. redesign architects Coore and Crenshaw, and the radical but fun Tobacco Road. There are private clubs oozing quality like CCNC as well...
Don't miss the opportunity to play The Sandhills of Nth Carolina!
