Golf at Casa de Campo started with the opening of Pete Dye's wonderful Teeth of the Dog course in 1971.
With seven handcrafted holes right on the coastline the course was an instant success.
In 1974 Dye's Links course opened, followed by La Romana in 1974.
Dye Fore was the last of the courses designed by Pete Dye, opening in 2005.
Both La Romana and Dye Fore are 27 hole courses, with three loops of nine holes.
Pete Dye designed over 200 golf courses internationally including:
- PGA West Staduim Course
- La Quinta Resort- The Dunes Course & The Mountain Course
- TPC at Sawgrass
- Crooked Stick GC
- Colleton River Plantation, Dye Course
- Harbour Town Golf Links
- Kiawah Island Golf Resort- The Ocean Course
- Long Cove Club
- Blackwolf Run- River Course, Meadows Valley Course
- Whistling Straits- Irish Course, Straits Course
& many more!
Teeth of the Dog has been regarded as one of the top 100 courses in the world now for decades.
The inland holes are all nicely designed and pleasant to play.
There is little elevation change through these holes but in reality they are just the warm up for the main event.
Every golfer will delight in the coastal holes which are quite unique.
I don't know of anything quite like it.
Pete Dye had a team of locals who helped shape these holes manually.
It dates these holes, but in a good way.
I'd love to play them over..
Notable holes include:
- Hole 2, a relatively gentle opening par 4 where the featureless fairway is jazzed up with stick walls along the fairway and behind the green
-Hole 4, a lovely dogleg par 4 with green on the coast
-Hole 5, a mid length par 3 right on the coastline. With waves crashing into the rocks around the green it is a spectacular hole
-Hole 6, a longer par 4 running right along the coastline. It is rated the hardest hole on the course for men. (see pic top of page)
-Hole 7, another magnificent coastal par 3- these are all world holes!
-Hole 8, a longer par 4 along the coast..
-Hole 16, a mid length par 3 along the coast- a great test of character for all golfers
-Hole 17, a strong par 4 along the coastline
Teeth of the Dog is a wonderful golfing experience.
The hand made ocean holes are simply magic!
Casa de Campo is a nice place to stay, with good restaurants, and enough golf to whet any golfer's appetite.
