Sunriver Resort is located near Bend in Oregon, and boasts four distinctive courses by well known architects in the one location.

The Resort caters for a number of different sporting activities and includes extensive walking and bike riding trails

The Woodlands course was designed by Robert Trent Jones Jnr and opened for play in 1982.

The setting is higher into the high desert terrain than Meadows and has more elevation change throughout the course.

Despite occassional views of the snow capped mountains most of the course outlook is restricted to the forest of Ponderosa and Lodgepines framing the fairways.

I am a fan of RTJ Jnr courses world wide and he is known for his wonderful bunkering and sculpted greens.

At Woodlands the greens still have that lovely movement, but perhaps more subtly than on most of his courses.

The bunkers do take the eye and are perhaps the key strategic element of the course.

The Woodlands Course is also known for it's remarkable conditioning.

Notable holes include:

- the par 5 first hole with green protruding into the lake

- the dogleg par 4 eighth hole with trees central to the dogleg

- the dogleg par 4 ninth hole with water either side of the fairway

- the pretty par 3 seventeenth hole  with water surrounding the green

The better player will enjoy Woodlands. It is a challenging course, but playable
