Jumeirah Golf Estates- Earth Course
The Earth Course at Jumeirah Golf Estates was designed by Greg Norman and opened for play in 2009.
It was the first of a planned four course complex.
The second course, named Fire was also designed by Greg Norman and opened in 2010.
The proposed third course (Water by Vijay Singh) and fourth course (Wind by Sergio Garcia, Greg Norman & Pete Dye) were put on hold by as a result of the global financial crisis.
Championships
The Earth Course was host to the inaugural Dubai World Championships in 2009 and in fact the course opening was held back pending that tournament and the global exposure it provided.
It continues to feature in the drama each year.
Course
Earth is a beautfully manicured oasis in the arid Dubai landscape.
The course is largely cocooned from the surrounding cityscape and desert surrounds by an upper class housing estate and lush garden setting.
The white sand splash bunkers are a feature that complement the verdant greens and fairways.
And there is no shortage of water- holes 6, 14, 16, 17 & 18 are attractive, strategic holes defined by their water hazards.
Who would have thought this would be the case on a course built in the desert?
Notable Holes include:
- hole 2, a long beautifully bunkered par 5
- hole 4, a long par 3 to a green surrounded by white splash bunkers
- hole 7, a lovely looking par 5 through a valley framed both sides by bunkers and trees
- hole 14, a long narrow par 5 with water very much in play for the last 150 metres to the green
- hole 16, a longish challenging par 4 with the green protruding into a lake. The approach is nerve wracking..
- hole 17, a gorgeous looking longish par 3 with an island green further protected by five deep bunkers
- hole 18, a gigantic par 5 with a creek ambling it's way down the middle of the fairway. The final green is spectacularly between the clubhouse and rocky water hazard.
The Earth Course at Jumeirah is a joy to play, and should be included in all golfing itineraries to to UAE.
