Wailua GC- hole 17
Wailua Municipal Golf Course is located just north of Lihue on the Hawaiian Island of Kauai.
Designed by Toyo Shirai, the course originally opened as a 9 holer in the 1930's, later expanding to 18 holes in 1961.
The original 9 holes now comprises the back nine, and has more elevation change and more mature trees framing the holes.
Wailua is known for hosting 3 USGA Amateur Public Links Championships, and is generally in good condition for a municipality course.
The course touches the Pacific Ocean on hole 1, 2, 3, 17 & 18 with the par 3 17th hole being the 'signature hole' for the course.
Notable holes include:
- the par 5 1st hole with green adjacent to the beach
Wailua GC- hole 1
- the long par 4 2nd hole which runs along the beach for the length of the hole
Wailua GC- hole 2
- the short par 4 third hole with tee on the beach
Wailua GC- hole 3
- the picturesque mid length par 3 seveenteenth hole with ocean backdrop
Wailua GC- hole 17 from the tee
- the tight long par 4 finishing hole
Wailua GC- hole 18
Wailua is a gentle walk by the sea, and as such is a nice relief from all the cart golf played in Hawaii.
At the time of writing green fees for non residents start at $48 for 18 holes, making it value for money.
The course is somewhat rudimentary in design and appearance compared to some of the modern courses on the island, but still has plenty of interest- and playing conditions are good
Wailua would be an ideal warm up for a golf tour to Kauai
