Southern Hills CC- hole 18 

History

 

Southern Hills Country Club was founded during the Great Depression years (1929- 1939).

The club then employed local architect Perry Maxwell to design the golf course which opened in 1935.

Gil Hanse  in 2019 was chosen to undertake a significant restoration of the course in line with Maxwell's original concepts

The course is not overly long, but it is testing with tight doglegs protected by mature trees.

It has proven itself as a true championship course

So far Southern Hills has hosted 8 majors:

- The U.S. Open ( 1958, 1977, 2001)

- The U.S.P.G.A. (1970, 1982, 1994, 2007 & 2022.

It has also been nominated for the upcoming 2032 P.G.A. Championship

 

Course

 

Southern Hills Country Club is 'a golfing institution'.

The facilities are something special- golf is just one activity that the club provides.

The members are spoiled!

Playing the championship course in early June, we found the course was in wonderful condition.

It was a joy to play..

 

Playing off the members tees the course played like a true championship course should.

The strategically placement of bunkers, water and trees dared us to take on risks to hit to position.

- and pay the penalty when we missed!

 

Southern Hills Country Club is one of the great championship courses and equally a quality member's course.

That is a pretty good combination!

 

  

Notable holes include:

 

hole 1- a longish par 4 that requires two strong shots to par this classic opening hole

hole 2- getting serious now, with a long par 4 that introduces green side hazards- it is the hardest hole!

 

 

hole 6, a classic par 3 where water and bunkers need to be avoided

 

 

- hole 7. a strong par 4 that requires length AND accuracy..

- hole 14, a lovely par 3 where the green is well protected by bunkers and water.

hole 18, a classic uphill finishing hole- longish, uphill and with a myriad of bunkers to avoid.. see pic top of page.

 

 

Southern Hills Country Club is both a top quality members course and championship venue.
