Big Cedar Lodge was conceived and built by conservationalist Johnny Morris, the founder of Bass Pro Shops.
He conceived Big Cedar Lodge as a destination for active people to get together to enjoy the striking wilderness that is the Missouri Ozark Mountains.

Payne's Valley
Payne's Valley is a 19 hole championship course designed by Tiger Woods with a little help from Big Cedar Lodge's Johnny Morris.
The course was named Payne's Valley after local Ozark native and World Golf Hall of Fame member Payne Stewart.
The course was named the best new public course in the USA by Golf Digest when it opened in 2021.
The course will always be remembered as the 19 hole course with a crazy final hole par 3 to an island green set in the rocks.
Notable holes include:
- hole 4, a pretty par 5 with a creek running across in front of the green, and a lake lapping on the left side.

- hole 10, a shortish downhill par 3 over a creek to a green with lake left
