Prairie Dunes- hole 10
History
Prairie Dunes Country Club was founded by salt tycoon Emerson Corey (and his 4 sons) in 1937, originally with nine holes designed by Perry Maxwell.
In 1957 Press Maxwell (Perry's son) completed the 18 holes.
The links style course is set in rolling dunes, and is reminscent of the famouse Scottish seaside links.
Renowned architect Tom Doak notes in his 'Confidential Guide' that Perry Maxwell's original nine holes are outstanding and rates the overall course 9 out of 10!
The original holes by Perry Maxwell are now holes 1, 2, 6, 7, 8, 9, 19, 17 & 18.
Over the years Prairie Dunes has hosted a number of national championships, including:
3 U.S. Women's Amateur, a U.S. Women's Open, a U.S. Mid Amateur, a U.S. Senior Amateur, a U.S. Senior Open, a Men's NCAA Championship and a Curtis Cup!
If you are lucky enough to befriend a member and get an invite, don't hang about.
Stay overnight and play a couple of times and all will be well with the world!
Notable Holes include:
- hole 2 (Willow), a mid length uphill par 3 to an unforgiving green. Some pin locations are scary!

- hole 10 ( Yucca) : 'see pic top of page.'- an imposing mid length par 3 to a partially hidden par 3..
- hole 15 ( The Chute), a long par 3 that demands accuracy for the tee shot to navigate a narrow gap in the trees..
Prairie Dunes- hole 15 'The Chute'
- hole 17 (Pheasant Hollow)
Prairie Dunes has it's own look and feel and is a nice contrast to the championship courses in central USA.
