Located on Mexico's Mogote Peninsula Paraiso Del Mar Golf Club was designed by Athur Hills and opened for play in 2009.
The links style course traverses undulating sand based terrain moving from dunelands through native bush and beside the coast.
The course is part of a large ongoing property development and is well placed being just 7 minutes by ferry from the Bay of La Paz.
At the time of writing the club had only 90 members, so is somewhat reliant on green fees..
Travelling Golfers with confirmed tee times are entitled to complimentary ferry rides to and from the course and the Bay of La Paz.
Course
Paraiso Del Mar is an interesting course!
The land is perfect for golf, but the thick native bushland limits views of surrounding holes, and indeed the hole you are playing!
The fun starts on the first tee where on striding to the championship tees I had absolutely no clue on the whereabouts of the fairway..
Walking through a gap in the bush to the forward tees one gradually has the lines of play revealed.
It turns out that the opening tee shot is a blind shot over the bush to a fairway that arcs to the left.
There is ample landing area, so no problem!!
This turns out to be a recurring theme- it is quite fun to find the Championship tees each hole and then spot the fairway..
There are also some memorable holes close to the coastline- the par 3 sixth and fourteenth holes are perhaps the pick of these.
Just when you think Paraiso Del Mar has revealed all of it's secrets it changes- the last three holes are more open, the terrain flatter.. .
..and water hazards define the lines of play.
Notable Holes include:
- hole 1, a relatively gentle par 5 where the main challenge is finding the fairway off the tee
- hole 3, an attractive mid length par 3 with a raised green and natural bunkering.
- hole 5, a challenging par 4 with the tee tucked in the bush and the green virtually on the beach
- hole 6, a gorgeous par 3 right on the beach (see pic top of page)
- hole 8, a strong par 4 requiring a carry over the cactus off the tee, and over a big pot bunker for the approach.
- hole 10, a mid length par 3 requiring a carry over bush from the tee
- hole 12, a strong par 4 with only a glimpse of fairway off the tee- it's a recurring theme..
- hole 13, a par 5 with a challenging tee shot through the palm trees, and lovely uphill approach to a beach side green
- hole 14, another delightful par 3 on the beach
- hole 16, a longish par 5 with water determining the line of play
- hole 17, a mid length par 3 over water
- hole 18, another flat par 5 with water dangerously in play for the approach
Paraiso Del Mar is an intriguing course, and most enjoyable to play.
I don't know of a course quite like it.
