The Ritz Carlton hotel at Half Moon Bay is conveniently located an easy 25 minutes away from San Francisco International airport, and is a lovely place to spend a day or two in transit.

For those journeying to or from the magical Monterey peninsula or Bandon Dunes in Oregon, San Francisco is a popular place to stop over. You can stay in the heart of city, or for a more relaxing alternative the Ritz Carlton is worth consideration.
The hotel is situated right on the point of a spectacular bluff with rolling surf as a gorgeous backdrop.
The hotel is excellent in all respects - service levels, spa, wine tasting room, restaurant and a spectacular ocean terrace to sit back and watch the action on the 18th hole, and the whitecaps beyond...

Oh yes, and there is golf with 2 courses - The old designed by Arnold Palmer with the 18th hole being the mandatory one ocean hole - but it sure is a beauty!
And that 18th hole provides much of the entertainment for those on the Ocean Terrace all day.
The second course is called the Ocean Course - perhaps taking liberties - as only 3 holes actually approach the sea. It is a pleasant course with plenty of variety, and interest.
The land is not particularly obvious golfing land, but heads inland from hole 1 and hole 2 which crosses a creek and then into an adjoining paddock where the bulk of the course is sited.
Whilst this is not a course worth travelling any distance to play, it is nevertheless a decent well designed course.

The routing eventually brings the golfer back to the ocean on the 16th tee. A downhill medium length par 4 with ocean left and behind the green, it is a spectacularly visual hole and a good test of golf.
A barranca crosses just in front of the green providing a testing approach shot.
I think this is by far the best hole on the course.

17 is a shortish par 3 along the clifftop. Not bad - but in my opinion the cliffs were not in play enough, and an opportunity was missed to create a postcard hole.

The final hole is a par 5 with cliffs along the left side. But after a tee shot over the creek back to the hotel land, the sea and cliffs are unsighted even though they are never far away. I cannot help but think there must have been some way to use the beautiful coastline to better advantage in the course - perhaps 17 & 18 could have been reversed?
Either way The Ocean Course is a nice way to spend the day - and the Ritz Carlton awaits you after the game!
