I played Old Mac on Tuesday  and the front nine again before the long trip home on Wednesday

I had done my preparation - I had been reading about the classic links holes for 10 years before I ever saw them , and these are the templates that C.B. MacDonald used in his designs

He didn't copy the holes , but he did use them as templates , and employed the strategies inherent in these holes when creating his version or interpretation of those classic holes

Some like , The Redan , and Short etc  - he used in all of his courses , and others less frequently

MacDonald also included original holes in his designs , but with styles and strategies sympathetic to the template holes...

And then Seth Raynor , who started as the engineer assisting CB , and then went on to build many more course himself - used many of the same concepts...

The MacDonald , and Raynor courses form a significant portfolio of courses that mark the start of golf architecture in the USA...

Hence CB  , who also won the first US Amateur as a player , was considered the father of golf in America

MIke Keiser is a member of the first course built by MacDonald - the ultra exclusive Chicago GC , and was keen to pay homage by building a unique course as the 4th at Bandon Dunes .

Originally the concept was to reconstruct a legendary CB course in New York that no longer exists called The Lido Club - hailed as the best in the world at the time .

However when Tom Doak as an expert in MacDonald was asked to build the Lido at Bandon he rejected the idea , saying the land at Bandon  was not suitable for such a project , and in turn suggesting that a project of template holes might better fit the land

And what they have built may well be regarded as the best links course in the world!

Hole 5 at Old MacDonald - "Short"

I was fortunate to have viewed Michael Robin's documentary on the making of Old Mac before I played , discussed it with him , and done my reading

It was all worthwhile because I was able to identify the holes , and better appreciate them

And it was very exciting to play some of the holes I have read about for so long , yet had little chance to play - holes like no 8 - The Biarritz , and no 16  - The Alps.....

The holes are :

1 .  Double Plateau

2.   Eden

3 .  Sahara

4 .  Hogsback

5 .  Short

6 .  Long

7 .  Ocean ( an original )

8 .  Biarritz

9 .  Cape

10 .  Bottle

11.   Road

12 .  Redan

13 .  Leven

14 .  Maiden

15 .  Westward Ho! ( an original )

16   The Alps

17 .  Littlestone

18 .  Punchbowl

I have a draft of the documentary on the making of Old Mac by Michael Robin , which is being submitted for various film awards - if anyone wants to see it

Old Mac is something very special!
