Denver Country Club
It was 27 degrees and sunny today as we headed out to Denver Country Club, which is located right in the heart of downtown suburban Denver. My contact in Denver and host for the day, was the genial Max Caulkins.
Denver CC is on a fairly tight piece of land and is consequently not an overly long course - although plenty long enough for me.
Over the years a number of architects have had a go at redesign, including famously Tillinghast, and Flynn ( who went on to do Cherry Hills). For the last 20 years or so Coore Crenshaw have been the advising architects , which is not a bad things me thinks!
The club has a very wealthy and exclusive membership and the club facilities are absolutely awesome. Can you imagine, say Yarra Bend in Melbourne, spending say $50 million on the course and say $200 million on clubhouse and infrastructure Sounds ridiculous, doesn't it?
This is not a championship course (although they did play a national amateur championship there recently) and is not a particularly good routing, or great design, IMO. However it was fun to play, pretty, an easy walk, and has some very good holes. I had a ball because of the company I played with today - Big Max, and Tom Ferrell from Colorado Golf Club.
We talked non stop about golf , and golf design....
