The golf course at Wairakei International dates from 1970 when Peter Thompson, and Mike Wolveridge who later became so prolific as a team in their own right, teamed up with John Harris to design the course.

The course became known around the globe and in 1996 was rated in the top 100 courses in the world outside the USA.

The site is wonderful for golf with much of the central area exhibiting rolling terrain with interesting elevation changes- perfect for the production of unique golf holes with character.

And the whole Wairakei property is one big sanctuary for flora and fauna, heavily treed, and full of birds...

It really is a gorgeous place to play golf.

While the course boasts some memorable holes, the flatter land on the outskirts of the course inevitably produces some less interesting efforts- holes one and nine are examples of this...

On the other side of the ledger holes such as two, six, eight, fourteen, fifteen, and sixteen make good use of the natural formations to produce good holes...

Other Courses in the area

When in Taupo don't miss the chance to play Kinloch- rated by some as the best course in New Zealand...

And an hour or two down the road you will find the fabulous Cape Kidnappers- that makes a nice threesome and worth the trip!

Where to stay?

The world famous Huka Lodge is a fine place to stay at Taupo if you can afford it, and the Taupo Hilton is pretty decent as well
