Portmarnock Links has a fascinating history dating back to when St Marnock established his monastery in this area of County Dublin in the 8th century.

Centuries later the surrounding land became home to the Jameson family, famous for their whiskey

The Jameson Estate included some fine links land, and in 1858 John Jameson built a 9 hole course (The Jameson links), one of the earliest courses in Ireland.

In 1893 Jameson was approached to lease out part of the estate for development of another links course- Portmarnock Golf Club, which went on to become one of the famous links courses of Ireland.

Jameson became the first president, and leased the land for 25 years before beqeathing it to the club.

The down side of the new course development was the loss of the family course- the Jameson links-  as some of the linksland was used for the new course

Not all the land was needed however, and in 1996 Bernard Langer was employed to design a new course- called Portmarnock Links.

This course incorporated three of the original holes from the Jameson Links- holes 8, 9 & 15

Portmarnock is a classic links course with rolling fairways, pot bunkers and long rough that must be avoided

If the wind blows it can be a challenging course, but play of the appropriate tees, and you can relish a true links golf experience

And the 19th hole at Portmarnock Links Hotel is a highlight!

Notable holes include:

hole 1- a strong 4 with burn crossing the fairway

holes 8, 9 & 15- the original Jameson holes (see pics mid page)

hole 10 - a delightful par 3 with tabletop green
