Cleeve Hill GC

Cleeve Hill GC, formerly known as Cleeve Common, was originally designed by Old Tom Morris in 1891.

The course sits 1000 feet above the surrounding countryside, providing dramatic views..

It is the highest point in the Cotswolds

The course routing wends around the high green paddocks, sharing custody with flocks of sheep.

The sheep contribute to course maintenance and add a bit of character to the open grassy fairways.

Golfers will need to cope with significant slopes and draw on their skills to hit balls above or below their feet..

And the wind is a significant factor!

Toward the middle of the round the terrain changes with holes moving through ancient quarries and a 3000 year Iron Age fort.

For me this tumultuous landscape is more dramatic and provides the more memorable golf.

Late in the round the open hilly fairways return.

Cleve Hill is generally regarded as one of the more interesting courses in the Cotswolds.

There are an unprecedented 8 blind shots in a round at Cleeve Hill.

It is definitely 'a second shot course'.

Notable Holes include:

- hole 6 (Grass Quarry), an amazing par 3 in dramatic terrain- there is trouble everywhere, and nowhere to hide!

- hole 8 (High Point), with a steep incline, panoramic views and sheep everywhere it is a hole with character

- hole 15 (The Punch Bowl), requires a pretty decent carry over the old quarry to a bowl shaped green.

- hole 17 (Homeward), a long par 4 from the highest point on the hill that encourages bombers to have a lash- but beware of the quarries left and right!

High on the hills of Cleeve Common hikers, cyclists and dog walkers mix with flocks of sheep and hardy golfers.

For golfers carrying the bag or even rolling a push buggy it can be a rigorous activity.

There are some dramatic holes and with wonderful views and just a light breeze it can be something quite special.

Cleeve Hill Golf Club is golf from a different era, but pick your day weather wise and it is memorable.
