The Berkshire
The Berkshire- Red Course
The Berkshire Golf Club was founded in 1923 and boasts two Herbert Fowler designed courses known as The Blue and The Red course(s).
The Red Course sits on higher ground than the Blue and is more undulating and a little more dramatic.
It boasts six par 3's, par 4's & par 5's.
The Red Course is one of the 'special' courses in London's famous heathlands, and a personal favourite.
Golf World magazine voted it number 85 in the world!
The Red Course flies under the radar somewhat, but is undoubtedly one of the best golf experiences anywhere.
Notable Holes include:
- hole 3, a strong par 5 where the longer hitters might be tempted to take on the burn off the tee to give a chance at getting home in two! And the island of fairway in the middle of the green side bunker is a hoot!
- hole 5, a tricky par 3 where the player needs to fly over a sea of heather to a well protected green avoiding deep bunkers not visible from the tee..

- hole 10, a longish uphill par 3 where missing the green is not an option!

- hole 11, a short par 4 with small well protected green- maybe the smart money would be on leaving a full shot in!

- hole 14, a long par 4 with a slightly raised and angled green

- hole 15, a wonderful turning par 5 framed by a wall of pine trees and masses of heather either side. But the real danger is the winding ditches of water in the right rough..

The Berkshire is one of the great golf clubs of the world.
Members are blessed with two such courses to play each week!
Both the blue and the red course are tournament tough, but eminently fair.
They are not tricked up or excessively long, but rather they demand thoughtful and accurate strokeplay.
You would be hard pressed to find a club with two courses of this standard.
It's world class!
