St Andrews Links- The Eden CourseSt Andrews Links- The Eden Course- hole 1

St Andrews in Scotland is the home of golf.

Golf was first played here 600 years ago and the seven public golf courses here are legendary.

The famous Old Course hosts The Open Championship every few years in conjunction with some of the other great courses in Britain.

It may be the most famous golf course in the world but The Old Course and the other six courses at St Andrews are public access.

The Eden Course was officially opened on July 2, 1914.

Harry Colt was appointed course architect.

The course was initially more difficult than the other courses at St Andrews.

It had longer carries off the tee, and severe bunkering.

On opening, architect Alistair McKenzie rated Eden as the second best course in Scotland behind the Old Course!

Sadly the course was redesigned by Donald Steel in the 80's and the first two and last two holes were built over and replaced by The St Andrews Links Golf Academy.

In the re development all of the front nine and three of the back remained Colt originals, while six in the back nine were by Donald Steel.

 Notable Holes include:

- hole 1, a short par 4 where the tee shot with gorse either side is a little daunting. It then opens up to be a lovely picturesque hole.

But it is an easy birdie putt!

Any golfing trip to St Andrews is likely to be a smorgasbord of links golf.

It is wonderful to have so many options.

These days with Dumbarnie Links and Kingsbarns complementing the old St Andews Links courses-

and the Kingdom of Fife courses just down the road, we are blessed at every turn with quality links golf options.

The Eden Course is the ideal starter!
