Course Review

Roxburgh Golf Club is located on the road from Queenstown to Dunedin on New Zealand's south island.

The course is defined by the rocky schist outcrops that dominate the landcape.

It is somewhat of a 'links type course' meandering through the ancient metamorphic terrain.

Roxburgh can be likened to Arrowtown Golf Club, which is another personal favourite in a similar landscape.

Roxburgh is a short course, 4372 metres for men off the tips and only 4079 metres for women.

It is a unique golfing experience, and great fun.

Two holes stand out:

The par 3 fourth hole is a short iron drop shot from a tee high in the rocks.

The line between/over two majestic pine trees to a green perched on a hill is breathtaking!

The short par 4 seventeenth moves slightly uphill between swathes of rock protruding into the lines of play.

It is a thinking man's hole, yet attractive at the same time.

Notable Holes

Hole 1 (First Chance), a short par 5 between the main road on the left and rocky collections on the right.

Hole 2 (Golden Gate), a lovely par 3 protected on every side by boulders and rocky outcrops

Hole 4 (Happy Valley), my favourite hole at Roxy is a delightful par 3 from a tree top eyrie through some massive pine trees and down to a hill top green protected by heavy slopes

Queenstown on New Zealand's south island is a popular golf and sightseeing destination.

Walks like The Milford Track and The Routeburn, Jet Boats, world class wineries, Bungy Jumping, visits to Old Arrowtown, wonderful restaurants, and of course great golf are all part of the appeal.

From a golfing point of view Jack's Point, Millbrook and The Hills are championship courses with big reputations.

Arrowtown is also a must play!

And Queenstown Golf Club is good fun with magnificent water views from a number of holes.

Roxburgh should also be included for all serious travelling golfers
