Formby GC- hole 18 & clubhouse
Formby GC
Formby Golf Club was originally designed by Willie Park and dates back to 1884.
Over time Harry Colt made changes to make the course more playable..
Sadly the course lost 3 good holes to coastal erosion.
In 1978 Frank Pennink built 3 new holes ( holes 7, 8, & 9) to replace the coastal holes lost.
It is considered that the loss of the 3 holes on the beach was a significant loss, although the new holes are certainly interesting!
These days the course moves through pine trees on relatively flat land for both the start and finish of the round.
These holes are well designed and nice to play, but not necessarily world class.
However the feel of the course soon changes as the topsy turvy terrain inevitably demands your attention!
Doglegs with fierce undulations, and well protected greens with blind approaches really test the best of golfers.
It is a real roller coaster ride..
..and then suddenly the latter holes flatten out!
Reminscent of the early holes the closing holes are framed by pine trees, with heather to carry off the tee and each side of the fairway.
Formby is one off the more interesting links in the U.K.!
I would play it again in a heart beat!
Notable Holes include:
- holes 1 & 2, two flattish opening par 4s with well placed bunkers and a line of trees continuing down the right boundary. Nice!
