HISTORY OF VIETNAM

Vietnam had nearly 93 million citizens as of 2016,making it the world's 14th most populous country. It has a fascinating history, and is uniquely positioned, bordered by China to the north, Laos to the northwest, Cambodia to the southwest, Thailand across the Gulf of Thailand to the southwest, and the PhilippinesMalaysia and Indonesia across the South China Sea to the east and southeast. Hanoi has been the capital since the reunification of North and South Vietnam in 1976, although Ho Chi Minh City remains an historical city of significance.

Following the Japanese occupation in the 1940s, the Vietnamese fought French rule in the First Indochina War, eventually expelling the French in 1954. Thereafter, Vietnam was divided politically into two rival states- North and South Vietnam. The resulting conflict between the two is known as the Vietnam War. The war ended with a North Vietnamese victory in 1975, however the country remained poor and politically isolated. More recently however, Vietnam's economic growth rate has been among the highest in the world.

Most travellers to Vietnam are attracted by the country's wonderful natural beauty and gentle people.

Memories of Vietnam will be dominated by images of junks in Halong Bay, green rice fields dotted with the conical hats of workers in the north, temples of the former imperial capital of Hué, and the old Japanese Bridge and bustling streets of shops in old Hoi An.

Vietnam has it's own unique character, and has something for everyone.
