Golf in the Sandbelt

"Melbourne has the most iilustrious and unique selection of golf courses of any city in the world, with an amazing cluster of vintage layouts in its suburban sandbelt, all dating from the golden era of architecture in the 1920's. Legendary architect Dr. Alister McKenzie was influential in many of the designs.

These breathtaking courses are all cut from the same cloth. Their rolling fairways are lined with with gum and tea trees; the shaggy overgrown roughs are comparable to Scottish roughs; the par 3's when examined as a group are perhaps the most sensational and dsitinguished par 3's that can be found anywhere; and the natural looking 'Melbourne bunkers' are the most beautiful we have ever seen.

Golf in Melbourne is an experience no passionate golfer should miss. The sandbelt has the makings of an utterly superb golfing holiday!"

The eight Sandbelt courses are located in close proximity to each other in the south eastern suburbs of Melbourne, some 30 or 40 minutes drive from the city centre.

Royal Melbourne Golf Club is the flagbearer for the sandbelt courses, and is generally regarded as one of the top ten courses in the world. The club has two courses- the West Course, and The East Course. When the club hosts tournaments such as The President Cup, or Australian Open a composite course is used which comprises a combination of holes from both courses.

While Royal Melbourne provides golf on a grand scale, Kingston Heath shows what can be acheived on a small parcel of land. The course is much tighter off the tee, and the gorgeous McKenzie bunkering dominates. You will play golf holes at Kingston Heath that will stay with you always. The course is regarded as one of the top 30 courses in the world.

Victoria GC is located in the same rolling sand as Royal Melbourne, with the courses only divided by a road. Little surprise that the layout reminds one a little of Royal Melobourne in places. The bunkering at Victoria is superb, and the course has long been rated as a world top 100 course. With accommodation and dining facilties in the grand old clubhouse, Victoria is a popular stop for travelling golfers..

Metropolitan GC has a shared history with Royal Melbourne and is located in Caulfield on generally flatter terrain than its compatriots.

The course is set in a vast garden like setting of native gums and shrubbery dominated by the red flowering gum. The course has hosted 7 Australian Opens, 5 Australian PGA's and numerous other tournaments of note. It is famous around the world for the quality of it's playing surfaces, and given the relatively level site and beauty and protection of the surrounds, it is one of golf's great walks!

It is a nice contrast to the other sandbelt courses, and has been a regular in world top 100 ratings.

Huntingdale GC shares a boundary with Metropiltan, and is world renowned as the long term host of The Australian Masters tournament.

Classic sandbelt bunkering dominates a course which is as much a top members course as it is a championship arena,

Commonwealth GC has also featured in world top 100 courses, and has some magnificent sandbelt holes.

Yarra Yarra GC also features that classic bunkering, and some of the best par 3's anywhere.

Woodlands GC is the southern most of the sandbelt course, and perhaps the least known. Nevertheless the firm, raised greens, and plentiful bunkering can test the best. And there are some ripping holes here!

Is there anywhere in the world that can offer such quality in the one area?
