Royal Wellington at Heretaunga was established in 1895 and the Club has hosted 6 New Zealand Opens. Well known caddy Steve Williams is a local and at his first major tournament, Williams caddied for Peter Thomson in the 1976 NZ Open at the Heretaunga course.

Over recent years, the course was remodelled by Greg Turner and Scott McPherson and reopened in February 2014.

The Heretaunga course has a traditional parkland design with 4 brand new holes, 9 use the original corridors and 5 holes remain untouched from their original design.

All 18 holes feature new greens with hole placements testing the golfer with varying local wind conditions.

The new layout has 5 tees catering for golfers of all levels.

Distances and slope ratings are Black 6,601m (131), Blue 6,152 (129), 5,780 (129), Green 5,123 (113) and Yellow 4,368 (102).

I joined an afternoon comp with a large group of retirees playing off the green tees.

This was an easy introduction to Heretaunga and a particularly enjoyable day as I was warmly welcomed by the group especially at the 19th hole!
